Stokes, who batted at number four, was bowled seventh ball in Canterbury's 221-9 in 50 overs against Otago Volts.

Amid speculation the allrounder was using the match as a tune-up in case he earns a dramatic Ashes call-up, he looked in need of time in the middle when he turned out for Canterbury against Otago.

The 26-year-old was just as bad with the ball, finishing with figures of 0-49 from nine overs as Canterbury lost by three wickets and England battled Australia in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide. Should Stokes be cleared, he could therefore be playing for England within a matter of days.

Stokes remains banned from worldwide duty while the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decide whether or not he will be charged, although the 26-year-old is free to play domestic cricket.

It was only the 20th wicket in 76 matches for Otago spinner Anaru Kitchen.

Stokes is now banned from global cricket, while British authorities probe his alleged involvement in a late-night fight outside a Bristol nightclub.

Anderson spoke earlier this week about the possibility of becoming vice-captain, confirming he would not rule himself out if asked but adding too that he does not see the role as a critical one - with so many experienced players on hand to help Root.

Stokes, meanwhile, appeared to hurt his side during his Canterbury bow, although he is expected to be fit to face Auckland Aces on Wednesday. "It's to be expected that he's a little rusty but he'll benefit from the run".

Asked on Monday if he would say no to the vice-captaincy, Anderson said: "Of course not, I wouldn't".
