It also will have features that can search for nearby ExxonMobil or Shell stations - and GM plans to eventually add Shell's in-car payment functionality that it trialed in the United Kingdom with Jaguar Land Rover. The new feature, dubbed Marketplace, reflects GM's role in pioneering what is considered the first Connected Car platform, OnStar, 21 years ago.

The new GM Marketplace will initially roll out in 2017 and 2018 GM-branded vehicles with 4G LTE connectivity and compatible infotainment systems. That number is expected to reach 4 million vehicles in 2018.

The commerce platform uses real-time interaction data-think the location of the vehicle, time of day, and the driver's established digital relationship with merchants like Starbucks-to offer highly personalized experiences. In addition to those brands, app-based courier service delivery.com will also provide services from local independent businesses by enabling customers to order online from their favorite local restaurants, wine and spirits shops, grocery stores and laundry and dry-cleaning providers - all from the front seat of their vehicle.

Amazon.com is partnering with other automakers, including Ford Motor Co, to offer in auto ecommerce capability through Amazon's Alexa personal assistant system.

Priceline.com gives drivers access to hundreds of thousands of hotels and exclusive hotel savings on the go.

- Applebee's, helps drivers locate a nearby restaurant and allows ordering featured items and re-ordering favorites.

But the automaker hopes the bigger payoff will come through increased loyalty to its Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands.
