Rep. Al Green's bid to impeach Trump fails in the House

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) said on Tuesday that he will bring the articles to the floor for a vote on Wednesday, adding that prominent Democratic leaders have asked to meet with him to discuss the bill.

Several Dems contend that it's premature to bring articles of impeachment before special counsel Robert Mueller completes his investigation into the Kremlin's election meddling. Every Republican voted against the measure, while 58 Democrats voted for impeachment, and four Democrats voted present.

Forcing a vote on impeachment before investigators complete their work, Democratic leaders say, may undermine the potential for a bipartisan effort over impeachment if inquiries uncovered compelling evidence against Trump.

"Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment".

While Green is not the only member of Congress to have drafted articles of impeachment, he could become the first lawmaker to trigger a vote Wednesday.

Only a few weeks after it was announced six House Democrats were introducing articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, the House of Representatives has chose to table the proposal.

The congressman argued Mr. Trump is inciting hatred and bigotry and is dividing Americans based on race and other traits. The resolution cites the comments made after the white nationalist marches in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August, after which Trump said the marchers on both sides were "very fine people".

"I love my country".

"I love my country", Representative Al Green of Texas said in a memo to colleagues Tuesday, before adding he meant to bring articles of impeachment against a president who was "unmindful of the high duties of his high office and the dignity and properties thereof".

Lawmakers voted on the motion to table, and not impeachment itself. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called impeachment a waste of time and energy, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) urged patience for frustrated Democrats who wanted to bring impeachment proceedings against Trump.

Despite the concerns from fellow Democrats, Green said he is pushing impeachment now as a matter of conscience.
