Square Enix Announcing A New Tomb Raider Game

Last week, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda confirmed that Eidos Montréal had put a Deus Ex sequel on hold to work on a Tomb Raider followup and a couple other games.

"Square-Enix is excited to share some big news with you next year", reads the statement on Twitter. This is because Square Enix says it is taking a "new approach" for the upcoming Lara Croft adventure.

It's been over a year since a guy got a bit too careless while riding the subway, and was caught making a presentation for a game called Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

We have a confirmation of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider name and release. Our journey will begin with a major event in 2018. Tomb Raider saw Croft stranded on a mythical island and running from a crazed cult, while Rise of the Tomb Raider followed her through Siberia to find the secrets of immortality before a villainous organization. A new Tomb Raider game is in development.

Announcements of announcements aren't my favorite thing in the world, especially when they're for not-exactly-a-surprise news that a popular videogame series is getting a another sequel. After all, the live-action Tomb Raider movie lands in theaters on March 16, 2018. It looks as though Square Enix might be doing something similar to what Bethesda did when they announced Fallout 4 and released it 6 months after its official reveal.
