Tennessee hires Jeremy Pruit as new head coach

CBS affiliate WVLT reported Thursday morning that Tennessee has hired Pruitt, and will introduce him during a press conference later in the day.

He was Georgia's defensive coordinator the next two seasons before taking over for Kirby Smart as Alabama's defensive coordinator in 2016.

Pruitt won three national championships (2009, 2011 and 2012) while at Alabama.

After going a dismal 4-8 and 0-8 in the SEC, Tennessee let go of Butch Jones and the hunt was on.

Pruitt replaces Butch Jones, who was sacked November 12 after going 34-27 overall and 14-24 in Southeastern Conference competition in five seasons.

The search for the Vols' next head football coach is likely coming to an end. Alabama led the nation in scoring defense and ranked second in total defense a year ago.

The Tennessee Vols are working to finalize a deal that will make Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt the new head coach at UT.

A two-time all-state defense back at Plainview High School, Pruitt played college ball at Middle Tennessee State and Alabama in the mid 90s.

Why This Cheerleader's Mind-Blowing Invisible Box Stunt Is Sweeping the Internet
Dontez Hines , an Anderson University football player, is another pro when it comes to the "invisible box" step . There has been a new entry to the long list of time-wasting sensations taking the internet by storm.

Following just one year as Florida State's defensive coordinator, Pruitt traveled up north to Athens, Georgia to serve as the Bulldogs defensive coordinator for two years.

Anyway, here's what we think Pruitt's staff could look like at Tennessee.

"Six days ago, I mentioned several attributes that I sought to find in the next leader of our football program, and Coach Pruitt meets all criteria".

Pruitt's success this season is particularly impressive given how hard Alabama's defense has been hit by injuries.

The story began to pick up steam when Tennessee appeared to have hired Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano.

With the early signing period now less than two weeks away, it would seem at least somewhat important that Fulmer hires someone as soon as possible.

Tennessee's coaching search then ranged from Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Duke's David Cutcliffe, Purdue's Jeff Brohm, North Carolina State's Dave Doeren and Washington State's Mike Leach until athletic director John Currie was sacked last week. Pruitt was a 2013 finalist for the Broyles Award.
