Canadian Blood Services puts out urgent call for donations

Canadian Blood Services has seen a notable increase in donations since December 18, when it issued an urgent call for eligible donors to fill 35,000 open appointments across Canada by January 6.

"We know that Canadians are busy with travel and activities over the holidays, and we hope that they will make time to save a life and give blood".

UBS says during the holiday season, blood donations tend to drop about 40 percent and it's during that time that donations are needed most.

"It's always a struggle during the holidays".

"This year we are asking people in Greater Manchester to focus on giving and to register to give blood". While some people are spending time at home with their families, others are spending the holidays in the hospital. But a mobile clinic will be operating in Rocky Mountain House, at Church of the Nazarene, 5340 59th Ave., from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. with 66 open appointments.

Platelets are also collected but this poses a hard challenge because such donations only have a shelf life of seven days, notes the Canadian Blood Services. It's closed Sunday and Monday. Only seven per cent of Canadians are O-negative, he said.

Blood and blood products are a critical part of every day medical care including major surgeries, medical procedures, cancer treatments and managing disease. "Right now as of this morning we're under a two-day supply of O-negative blood so it's flashing red right now".

"We also need more donors from the Asian community to help people from these communities who are more likely to have conditions like Thalassaemia, which require regular blood transfusions".

There has been a "notable increase" in donors since then, the CBS said a news release Wednesday.
