World Organization To List VideoGaming Addiction As Mental Health Issue

Gaming addiction has come under scrutiny in recent years.

The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe.

The World Health Organisation has classified gaming addiction as an official mental health condition for the first time. In 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) added Internet Gaming Use Disorder as a condition "recommended for further study". Chris Ferguson, a professor of psychology at Stetson University in Florida whose research interests include video games and other media violence effects, described the ICD as "the book of real diseases that you can get insurance payments for".

It's likely that there still hasn't been enough research conducted into games being actually addictive (and under the current diagnosis the World Health Organization has proposed it looks like I was definitely suffering gaming disorder for about three weeks after I broke up with my boyfriend at uni), but this combined with the wider public uproar over loot crates previous year could prompt some increased scrutiny. "Children's grades drop as they game more and more", Gentile said.

Khloe Kardashian Reveals Her Baby-Naming Strategy With Tristan Thompson
The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is expecting her first child with her boyfriend Tristan Thompson in just three months. Khloe told host Ellen DeGeneres that she and Tristan haven't found out the sex of their baby yet, and she said they want to.

He said that he has recently begun to realise that he could have a serious problem. Having captivated gamers for more than four decades, more than 2 billion people around the world enjoy video games.

Gaming disorder could well be seen as linked to controversy around loot boxes and what constitutes gambling in gaming. If it is just a symptom, then treating gaming disorder "really could do damage" in that it distracts doctors from the real underlying problem, said Ferguson. But Ferguson argued that, if it is a disorder, it seems to be very rare.

But the World Health Organization spokesman cautioned that it was premature to speculate on the scope of the problem.
