Road accident on Delhi-Chandigarh highway kills four powerlifting players

The incident came to light after police received information from passerby regarding the accident near Singhu Border at around 4:14 am on Sunday.

Four powerlifters were killed and two others, including world champion Saksham Yadav were injured in auto accident in the wee hours today near the Singhu Border in outer Delhi's Alipur area.

According to primary investigation, the auto in which these athletes were travelling hit a road divider and crashed into a pole on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.

The police said that the other deceased have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka (27), Yogesh (24), Saurabh (18), Harish Roy (20). Yadav 28, had won a gold medal in the 2017 weightlifting championship for India. A sixth weightlifter (19) was battling for life. They were taken to Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela where they were declared dead by doctors, the police officer told IANS. Saksham Yadav and Rohit were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh. The impact of the contact was severe enough to wrench the roof of the vehicle entirely off.

"Saksham's condition is extremely critical as he has severe head injuries". All the other athletes including Bali were residents of Timarpur in north Delhi.

The mishap took place at around 4 am when the sportsmen were returning to Delhi in their Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire auto after attending an athletic meet in Panipat.

The vehicle followed through and then hit an electric pole.
