Jeff Bezos now richest person in history

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos's net worth hit $105 billion this week thanks to the holiday shopping season, making his fortune definitively larger than the peak of Microsoft's Bill Gates' net worth.

When the financial markets opened on July 27, 2017, the 53-year-old briefly surpassed Gates on the Forbes list of billionaires to become the world's richest person, with an estimated net worth of just over $90 billion. Forbes, another media conglomerate who tracks the net worths of the world's richest, estimated that Bezos's fortune is at $104.4 billion, which is almost parallel with Bloomberg's projections.

Amazon's share price, and therefore Bezos' net worth, has jumped significantly since September. That allowed Bezos, 53, who also owns the Washington Post and private space tourism company Blue Origin, to cross the $100-billion net worth mark in November.

He has given away nearly 700 million Microsoft shares and $US2.9 billion of cash and other assets since 1996, according to an analysis of his publicly disclosed giving.

Bezos came under fire previous year when The New York Times questioned his level of philanthropic giving. Shares of Amazon rose by 1.4 percent Monday, adding about $1.4 billion to Bezo's net worth, CNN reported.
