In a video recorded from aboard the WestJet plane and posted on Instagram, flames can be seen on the smoking Sunwing plane's tail section as frightened passengers scream and a member of the flight crew urges everyone to "remain seated".

A video shot from close range by an eyewitness went viral on social media platforms just after the incident.

The WestJet Boeing 737 had just arrived back from Cancun, Mexico, with 168 passengers on board when an empty Sunwing aircraft, which was being pushed back by third party ground handlers, crashed into it.

Two airliners collided on the tarmac of Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Saturday morning, causing a small fire.

Sunwing confirmed no crew or passengers were aboard its aircraft, which was being towed by the airline's ground handling service provider at the time of the incident.

A PASSENGER plane was evacuated after bursting into flames in a crash with another jet at an airport in Canada. The pilot hurriedly notifies an evacuation and fire crews are scrambled.

A spokeswoman for WestJet says everybody was safely evacuated from the plane via emergency slides and nobody on board was injured. "Out of nowhere there was an audible crunch and the plane rocked slightly".

Westjet responded on Twitter soon after the evacuation, "Due to the position of the aircraft on the laneway, WestJet guests required evacuation via emergency slide".

Emergency services responded to the collision between Sunwing Airlines and West Airlines which happened at 6:19p.m local time (2319GMT), Greater Toronto Airport Authority said in a statement.

It added that operations were being challenged by the extremely cold weather. "Everyone was a little shocked and kind of chuckling at the situation".
