An emergency cesarean section was performed, and Williams' delivered her first child.

Williams was put on blood thinners, but she wasn't out of the woods yet.

Doctors say Williams' experience should remind women to take care of themselves during pregnancy. She told the nurse her medical history, and suggested a CT scan ASAP. "The surgery went off without a hitch; Alexis cut the cord, and the wailing newborn fell silent the moment she was laid on her mother's chest", Vogue reports.

She was immediately given a drip, but when constant coughing from her pulmonary embolism opened up the scar from the c-section, her abdomen quickly filled with her now-thinned blood from the same drugs which were saving her life.

Doctors ordered an ultrasound but that turned up nothing, she was then sent for a CT scan which revealed blood clots in her lungs.

In the end, Williams had to have a filter inserted into a major vein to prevent any possible clots from entering her lungs, and was forced to go on bed rest for the next six weeks. "I was so happy to change diapers, but on top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder", he told the mag. "No one talks about the low moments-the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry", she said.

She went on to reveal, "I've broken down I don't know how many times". She said she plans on returning to the court for the Indian Wells in March.

Williams, who recently announced that she would not be returning to the Australian Open to defend her title, also expressed her vast desire to get back to dominance on the court.

'Or I'll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, "Why do I feel so sad when I have a attractive baby?"

"The memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again".

"After competing in Abu Dhabi I realised that although I am super close, I'm not where I personally want to be", she said in a statement on Snapchat. The two last faced each other at the Australian Open final a year ago, which Serena won.

Serena, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles during her tennis career, said she hated feeling helpless.
