The Huawei Mate 10 Pro will still be available as an unlocked device in the United States, and it's going to be up for preorder starting on February 4 and hit the shelves on February 18 with a $799 price tag.

"We've experienced unprecedented growth worldwide and are now bringing our award-winning products to the USA", said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group. Most US consumers don't buy unlocked phones, though, instead going through carriers to buy new phones.

Huawei, which appeared to lose a deal with AT&T that would have given it an improved foothold in the USA handset market, faced criticism from U.S. lawmakers over its intellectual property protection and its ties to Chinese intelligence, according to a letter seen by AFP this week.

It looks as if the firm will launch the phone without a carrier partner - but most USA consumers buy their phones through a carrier.

Huawei faced a similar issue in 2012 when the USA lawmakers claimed there were long-term security risks linked with the company's network equipment and services, leading it to pull out of the U.S. market. As the USA smartphone market is largely carrier centric, getting a deal with AT&T (or any other United States carrier) would have finally given Huawei a proper presence there.

Ankara consider them as a "terrorist group" that threatens its security. The Russian embassy in Ankara did not issue any comments.

As for why AT&T dropped out of the deal, the reasons were reported to be somewhat controversial.

"Everybody knows that in the USA market that over 90 percent of smartphones are sold by carrier channels", Yu said. Verizon is according to sources of Android Police under political pressure to not launch the Mate 10 later this year.

Huawei smartphones are already available in the USA, but only through some electronics stores and online platforms, including its own US website, plus Amazon.com and Best Buy. Gal Gadot will be Huawei's first Chief Experience Officer.

Back in 2012, when Huawei was better known for making broadband equipment, the United States warned that the Chinese government may be using the firm's kit to spy on foreign countries. Yet its blocking of deals involving Chinese companies in sectors where it has traditionally had an advantage shows its criticisms have more validity if directed at the U.S. market.

A representative of Huawei said on Thursday that they believe the move to protect their intellectual property rights can help promote the healthy and sustained development of the science and technology industry. The company was founded more than two decades ago by a former engineer from the country's People's Liberation Army, but Huawei has denied repeatedly that it has any ties to the government. The UK's security watchdog also anxious about a telecoms equipment deal between BT and Huawei.
