Unity Celebration planned in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr

A memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.in Marshall Park is a reminder of a man and his mission of helping others.

There will be events to commemorate Dr. King over the weekend in Waco, ending with a candlelight vigil on Monday at 6 p.m.at the MLK Jr.

Using the hashtag #ThankYouMLK50, Twitter users are encouraged to express their sentiments in reference to MLK.

The two groups will walk down Martin Luther King Jr.

"On Monday, to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the BLM invites families to spend the day together enjoying America's rich public lands heritage", said Brian Steed, BLM Deputy Director.

From 10:20 a.m.to 2 p.m., teams will take on jobs like painting indoors and outdoors, creating murals designed by Morehead High student Madelyn Cairo, landscaping, general maintenance and children's projects. Bring water, lunch, binocularsinsec, insect and sun protection, and prepare to walk up to half mile at some stops. Celebration will be held at 4 p.m.at Lee Street Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia.

King deserves the special day to honor him, but the best way to keep his dreams and hopes alive for 365 days each year is to read his books, speeches and sermons, and to read about and model his activism.

And while a few speakers touched on how today's world is different than the one Martin Luther King dreamed of, there are still plenty of people who represent his spirit in Atlantic City. His reported remarks took place in the context of a debate over the merits of those programs.
