The image is actually a compilation of dozens of photos captured by Curiosity's Hands Lens Imager, an instrument that is at the end of Curiosity's 7-foot-long robotic arm, which does not appear in the image.

The images were taken on October 25th, 2017 during the 1,856th "sol" (Martian day), during an unusually clear day which allowed the Rover's cameras to see more than 50 miles away.

The site from where the images were taken sits 327 metres (1,073 feet) above the landing site and looks over the crater, which is 3.5-3.8 billion years old.

NASA's Curiosity rover has called Mars home for years and it's work isn't done yet.

The panorama image was taken from a mountainside ridge and provided a view of the key places the Martian science robot has visited since its landing on the Gale Crater.

Yet a second woman, identified by human rights groups as Narges Hosseini, was arrested on Monday for participating in the protest. Unprecedented images of at least 11 women protesting the same way have been widely shared on social media.

Also, in the foreground one can see Mount Sharp, one of the biggest mountains on Mars which is a staggering 96 miles in diameter. This flexible arm wasn't in any of the shots that make up the selfie, which explains why the photo looks like something a Martian friend of Curiosity's could have taken.

The Curiosity Rover has sent other fascinating images from the ridge, where it's been for the past few months.

"From our perch on Vera Rubin Ridge, the vast plains of the crater floor stretch out to the spectacular mountain range that forms the northern rim of Gale Crater", said Vasavada. At Yellowknife Bay in 2013, the mission found evidence of an ancient freshwater-lake environment that offered all of the basic chemical ingredients for microbial life. The photo shows the beginning of the clay slope that Curiosity is about to begin trekking, but more interestingly, you can see nearly all of Mount Sharp sticking up in the photo's background. The plan is for the rover to climb the slope in the coming weeks to continue exploring.

The mission has subsequently approached the southern edge of the ridge and examined several outcrop locations along the way, NASA reports.
