Airbus Completes First Test Of Autonomous Flying Taxi Vahana

Vahana, the self-piloted electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from A³ by Airbus, successfully completed its first full-scale test flight on January 31 in Pendleton, Oregon.

Airbus' innovation center in the Silicon Valley has successfully completed the first test of its all-electric, pilotless personal aircraft.

The aircraft, which Airbus has been developing for less than two years, is created to carry one passenger and fly autonomously, according to its website. The Vahana will be subjected to further tests including transitions and forward flight.

Propelled by eight rotors that enable it to take off and arrive vertically, Vahana finished the second test run on Thursday. Airbus promised last January to test a prototype for an autonomous flying auto by the end of 2017.

Commonly referred to as a flying vehicle, Airbus has been working on an all-electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft called Vahana for a couple of years now.

"Vahana's first flight demonstrates Airbus' unique ability to pursue ambitious ideas quickly, without compromising the quality and safety for which the company is well-known", said Rodin Lyasoff, A³ CEO and former project executive of Vahana.

In a statement issued today (2 February), Airbus said that, in a flight that lasted less than a minute, the Vahana reached a height of five metres before descending safely.

European major Airbus has chosen Sanskrit word "Vahana" (meaning vehicle) for what might be the future of urban mobility - a self-piloted, vertical take off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.

The full-scale test aircraft flown on January 31 was 20.3-feet wide, 18.7-feet long, and 9.2-feet high.

The company also announced it has teamed up with California-based company MaGicALL for its motors.
