Netflix's Surprise Release, 'The Cloverfield Paradox,' Unleashes Chaos

Netflix tried a surprise play of their own Sunday night when it announced during Super Bowl LII that "The Cloverfield Paradox" would be available for streaming immediately after the big game. That's not too surprising for a movie that was given up on by Paramount and released in the middle of the night, but at least director Julius Onah's work was able to see the light of day. There's nothing in this movie we haven't seen before, and if you're waiting for the twist, you'll be disappointed to learn this film is as predictable as it is original.

From the looks and sounds of it, Cloverfield Paradox ties the two previous movies together.

DuVernay then confirmed the news on her Twitter feed.

As ScreenRant points out, Pegg's voice is one of the first things you hear when watching The Cloverfield Paradox.

The series' third film, The Cloverfield Paradox, at last answers some questions - while simultaneously calling off all the rules, opening up the possibility of infinite tales within a shared universe.

Heckingbottom wanted by Leeds to replace Christiansen

It's hard to get into the meta-narrative without spoiling too much (and, since I'm writing this review about two hours after the film suddenly appeared on Netflix, I'm hesitant to give anything away). The film stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Daniel Brühl, Chris O'Dowd, and David Oyelowo, among others, as the crew aboard Cloverfield Station, a space station orbiting a near-future Earth that has a particle accelerator "one thousand times more powerful than any on the ground".

The JJ Abrams' produced Cloverfield series gets its third entry on Monday via Netflix. "But for this to be a game-changing moment in how big movies can be marketing and distributed, [it] would have to be a good movie", Mendelson writes.

According to Netflix's release, the film tells the story of a group of global astronauts on a space station are working to solve a massive energy crisis on Earth.

However, it's not the first time this particular franchise made a decision to forego traditional marketing. Occasionally intriguing but more often sloppy, The Cloverfield Paradox only connects with the original Cloverfield monster-verse in the final scene. Paradox is, in fact, more of a fantasy film wtih numerous nods to sci-fi inspirations, including Sphere (1998), Event Horizon (1997), Interstellar (2014) and Alien (1979).

The Cloverfield Paradox cameos of Pegg and Grunberg aren't the only actors to make voice-only cameos in a Cloverfield film.
