Today's announcement at the Chicago auto show applies exclusively to the Wagon version of the Transit Connect with seats and windows. The company is aiming the vehicle directly at active baby boomers and families who need a combination of versatility, and tech with less price tag.

The wagon, which is really more of an MPV cross between a cargo and minivan, gets new gas and diesel engines, as well as advanced safety features such as standard automatic emergency braking, for 2019.

The refreshed vehicle can bring up to seven people and includes a tweaked fascia, technology updates, and new engine options. And one in three Boomers plans to purchase a vehicle in the next three years, according to AARP.

Like the current Transit Connect Wagon, Ford is offering the 2019 model in both short- and long-wheelbase variants.

But the 1.5-liter diesel engine in the Transit Connect Van will join the 2-liter diesel engine in the yet to appear Ford Ranger and a 3.0-liter diesel in the Ford F-150 that will be available later this year. Available across the line for the passenger-friendly Transit Connect Wagon, the new 1.5-liter EcoBlue four-cylinder diesel is the latest entry in the complicated and controversial United States diesel fleet. Both come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Though the van can be optioned with split rear doors that can open at a 180-degree angle, "the majority" of Transit Connect Wagon buyers - as opposed to the cargo van version - elect for a traditional, minivan-like liftgate.

The Transit Connect Wagon is expected to be one of the most affordable seven-passenger vehicles in the United States. Ford expects the wagon to be able to tow 2,000 pounds with a trailer tow package.
