Heavy sleet, hail and snow showers are expected to follow on Friday morning.

It comes after snowy conditions triggered collisions on the M20 on Monday, with the Met Office predicting it to be one of the coldest weeks of the winter so far.

But it looks like the big freeze may continue for some time yet, with Met Office forecaster Sophie Yeomans telling Metro.co.uk the United Kingdom is looking at a prolonged winter.

They include most of Scotland, northern England, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Scattered snow showers are expected across the Republic on Thursday night with temperatures set to plunge to as low as -2 degrees.
