The Porter crisis has damaged Kelly's credibility not only publicly but also inside the White House, where officials said he was losing the support of some West Wing staffers because of his management of the situation and apparent lack of transparency.

Porter issued a statement midday Wednesday denying the allegations but announcing his departure.

"White House chief of staff John Kelly must resign", said Van Pelt.

Despite all of this, the White House's first reaction this week to news of the spousal abuse allegations against Porter was to effusively praise and defend him.

Trump was reportedly "surprised" and "disheartened" to hear the news.

Despite their history, Willoughby said she never wanted him to lose his White House job, because she thought he was good at it, but "this is a effect of his actions".

Here's how the White House responded to the Rob Porter scandal Thursday.

A source familiar with the matter said Porter's ex-girlfriend called White House counsel Don McGahn in recent weeks to inform him of abuse allegations and added that whatever McGahn did with the information clearly wasn't enough.

Staff secretary Rob Porter says allegations that became public this week are "outrageous" and "simply false".

In an interview with CNN aired Thursday Porter's ex-wife Jennifer Willoughby detailed allegations of his abuse, saying that during her marriage she lived under a "low-grade constant terror of now knowing what I might do to set something off".

Porter's other ex-wife, Colbie Holderness, provided a brief statement to DailyMail.com alleging that Porter had abused her, but the website didn't detail her claims. In a blog post, Willoughby said Porter cursed at her on their honeymoon and a month later "physically prevented me from leaving the house". Three Senate Democrats on Thursday called for an investigation into the administration's process for determining access to classified information, citing concerns "over the apparent low and inconsistent threshold the Trump White House uses for obtaining an interim security clearance".

Trump is "very disturbed by the negative press attention" the Porter story received, a source close to the President said on Friday.

Willoughby added that Porter accepted her decision. She said she doesn't think he's done "the self-reflective work to acknowledge this issue", and "hasn't really taken the time to deconstruct why it is that he behaves this way, and until he's able to do that, I don't know that he has control over it".

Porter denied both of the ex-wives' allegations. The FBI also asked Porter to explain Holderness' black eye, according to a person familiar with the conversation. McGahn made other officials aware of the accusations she communicated but took no concrete steps, the official said. She told the publication that Porter punched her while they were on vacation. "I am proud to serve alongside him".

Kelly went on to infuriate immigration advocates and Democratic lawmakers on February 6 when he said some young immigrants eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program had failed to apply for the legal protections because they were too afraid - or "too lazy to get off their asses".
