Winter Olympics: Scotty James makes Pyeongchang snowboard halfpipe final

Shaun White will begin his quest for a third career gold medal at the Winter Olympics Monday night. White, who knew he had to put together hard combinations to top Hirano's score, then fell on his second run to leave himself one last chance at the gold.

James had laid down an excellent run that included his signature move, the switch backside 1260 with double cork, a trick with three-and-a-half rotations and a blind entry and landing.

By this stage, Japan's Ayumu Hirano had bumped him off top spot after a near-flawless second run which scored 95.25. He took the silver in this event at the 2014 Olympics at just 15 years old and is now more experienced and just as talented.

White, who was trailing after two runs, won his third Olympic gold in the halfpipe with a score of 97.75 on a make-or-break final run.

When asked for clarity and if he thought the allegations were gossip, White said he felt he had addressed the question. "I knew I did a great ride and I was proud of that and I could walk away with my head high, but when they announced my score and Id won, it crippled me", he said.

"This is why I won the qualifying", White said.

"I came out expecting a really good fight and that's exactly what it was", said James, who dragged his hand on his second run then fell attempting a 1080 on his final hit.

"The spirit of competition helps me get my runs accomplished and gets me motivated and I'm just so thankful for today". "I'm just truly sorry", he told anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. "So every experience in my life I feel like it's taught me a lesson and I definitely feel like I'm a much more changed person than I was when I was younger and, yeah, I'm proud of who I am today".

Shaun White, the snowboarding legend, looked to be in top form, scoring the best run of qualifying in the halfpipe event on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old snowboarder has previously admitted to sending lewd text messages to Lena Zawaideh, the former drummer of his band Bad Things, in 2016 and the parties later reached an undisclosed settlement. "They were always there to support me and reassure me that what we're doing is on the right track, and they believed in me".

Many struggled with the timing of their tricks on Wednesday, Japan's Yuto Totsuka feeling it most brutally after crashing heavily on the halfpipe coping and being taken from the course in a sled.
