Bill Paxton's family files wrongful death lawsuit against hospital and surgeon

Now, the actor/director's family has filed a lawsuit for a wrongful death against the surgeon and hospital that treated Paxton.

Bill Paxton's family is suing the hospital and surgeon who treated the actor past year.

Paxton's death certificate says he died February 25, 2017, from a stroke, 11 days after surgery to replace a heart valve and fix aorta damage.

The complaint notes that Khoynezhad deliberately performed the "unnecessary" heart surgery on Paxton and the surgeon, the hospital, as well as other staff members "acted negligently and/or recklessly and provided harmful and/or offensive management and treatment of (Paxton) thereby causing his death".

The lawsuit claims Cedars-Sinai "misrepresented and/or concealed information relating to the risks of surgery and care that would be provided and/or failed to adequately explain the proposed treatment or procedure".

Paxton, known for his roles in movies like Aliens and Twister, passed away in February of a year ago. He starred in HBO's "Big Love" as well as huge blockbusters such as "Titanic", "Aliens", and "Twister".

A spokesperson for Cedars-Sinai was not immediately available for comment, but the hospital did issue an earlier written statement, saying that it was prohibited by law from discussing individual cases. But we can share the following: Nothing is more important to Cedars-Sinai than the health and safety of our patients.

"These remain our top priorities", the statement said.

Paxton's widow Louise and their children James and Lydia say that the Apollo 13 and Terminator star went on to suffer multiple complications including excessive bleeding and cardiogenic shock, where the heart muscle is so damaged it can no longer pump enough blood for the body. "This process ensures that we can continue to provide the highest quality care".

Now, the wrongful death lawsuit states that risky procedures were used and the hospital is responsible for letting a doctor who wasn't familiar with the procedure perform the surgery. The family is represented by Broillet of Greene Broillet and Wheeler LLP.

Attorney Steve Heimberg noted in a press release accompanying the lawsuit that Khoynezhad left Cedars-Sinai shortly after Paxton's death.
