Suzanne Schulting won a first short track skating gold for Netherlands in the women's 1,000m final, beating Canada's Kim Boutin and Italian Arianna Fontana after Choi Min-jeong, who already has two golds this Games, crashed with South Korean compatriot Shim Suk-hee.

Skiing in his fourth Games and cheered on by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Myhrer won by 0.34 seconds from Ramon Zenhaeusern of Switzerland and by 0.67 from Michael Matt of Austria. Defending champion Norway was second, followed by Austria, which was first after the ski jump.

That seemed to open the door to his arch-rival Kristoffersen, who set the fastest time of the morning to lead Myhrer by 0.21 seconds, but he skiied out early on his second run as the Swede looked on from the foot of the course.

Hirscher, who won gold in the combined and giant slalom earlier in these games, missed a gate on his first run of Thursday's slalom race, eliminating him from the competition.

Yuri Danilochkin of Belarus placed 33rd, 13.16 seconds behind the victor. The Austrian took his family's collection of Olympic medals to three, with brothers Mario and Andreas having respectively won slalom gold at Sochi 2014 and freestyle men's ski cross silver at Vancouver 2010. Myhrer, who clocked a winning combined time of 1:38.99, was flattered to be talked about in the same breath as Stenmark.

The Austrian will therefore remain at two titles, failing to join his fellow countryman Toni Sailer (1956) and the Frenchman Jean-Claude Killy (1968) to be three times that of gold on the same issue.

"I was standing up there and I knew I had the silver and I only could win and I was like, 'No, I'm going to go full risk and if it works out then I deserve this medal, '" she said.

There was delight for Michelle Gisin, disappointment for Marcel Hirscher, record-breaking joy for Wu Dajing and sweet ice hockey revenge for United States' women's team during another action-packed day at the Winter Olympics.

West Virginia teachers go on strike
