All the aid workers affected by the attack were Nigerian nationals, according to Samantha Newport, a United Nations spokeswoman in Nigeria.

The UN official said she was moved by the solidarity of host communities who are sharing the little they have with those forced to run for their lives.

Recall that the attack occurred late on Thursday.

Rann is located some 175 kilometers east of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, near the border with Cameroon and communications are hard.

President Muhammadu Buhari says the attack on humanitarian workers in Rann, Borno State, more than ever shows Boko Haram insurgents as godless, brutish, and utterly to be despised.

Newport said: "Four aid workers were killed, one aid worker was injured, and one aid worker is missing, feared abducted".

She noted that about 80,000 people, including 55,000 internally displaced persons were now supported with humanitarian assistance in Rann.

"One of these courageous workers who lost their lives, and the nurse who is missing, were on the frontline providing critical services supported by UNICEF".

No details were immediately available for the fourth but Newport said the injured and missing were both women adding that all those involved were Nigerian.

Edward Kallon, the U.N. Humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, had called on the authorities to ensure the perpetrators "are brought to justice".

In January past year, a botched Nigerian airstrike meant to hit jihadist fighters killed at least 112 people as aid workers distributed food.

"Our deepest condolences go to the families of the victims and our courageous colleagues and we call on authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and accountability".

The Boko Haram is perpetrating a bloody campaign to overthrow the Nigerian government and establish an Islamic state.

According to him about 7.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2018 in the worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe and 6.1 million targeted for humanitarian assistance.
