The Araria constituency witnessed 56% on Sunday, while in Jehanabad and Bhabua it was 50% and 54% respectively.

The state recorded an overall polling of 42 per cent in the two seats, Joint Chief Election Officer R C Rai said. Bihar Congress chief Kaukab Quadri claimed that 137 EVMs had faced "technical glitches" and harmed the flow of voting. There were seven candidates in the fray in Araria, the third most important being Victor Yadav of Pappu Yadav's Jan Adhikar Party (JAP).

Meanwhile, the bypolls in Bihar are being considered as a direct battle between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, who has been leading the RJD's campaign since his father Lalu Prasad Yadav was jailed in a corruption case. The contest is mainly between RJD's Sarafaraz Alam, Taslimuddin's son, and BJP's Pradip Singh, who had won the seat in 2009 and finished runner-up in 2014.

The results for the bypolls will be declared on March 14.

From Bhabua Assembly seat in Bihar, the BJP has fielded Rinki Pandey, widow of sitting BJP MLA Anand Bhusan Pandey, whose death necessitated the bypolls. The saffron party has fielded Pandey's wife Rinky Rani and her principal challenger is Congress candidate Shambhu Singh Patel.

This is the first electoral battle in the state since Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who also heads the JD (U), walked out of the alliance with the RJD and the Congress and joined the BJP-led NDA a year ago.
