INX Media case: Trial court sends Karti to Tihar for 13-days,…

A Delhi Court on Monday sent Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance Minister P Chidambaram, to judicial custody till March 25 in connection with the INX media case.

The CBI Special Judge, Sunil Rana, denied the request for a separate cell and washroom, saying it would lead to Karti being "treated differently than other accused persons", quoted News18.

The court will also pass order on Kartis plea seeking a separate cell in Tihar Jail and urgent hearing of his bail plea today itself. "However, only keeping in view the fact of social status of the accused and his father, he can not be treated differently from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in a separate room", he held, rejecting Karti's contention of a "great fear" that "something was going to happen" to him.

Defence counsels Dayan Krishnan and Mohit Mathur told the court that Karti Chidambaram's father has dealt with various stringent penal laws such as TADA, MCOCA, Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act and NDPS Act. Organisation investigating me should be concerned about my security.

"CBI opposing my security application shows that there is a malafide and a political intent". We are outraged with the CBI stand on Karti's plea. Now his bail plea will be heard on March 15.

All that Karti will be carrying are his spectacles and medicines as he left for Tihar jail where he will now be lodged with fellow prisoners without any special facilities being extended to him.

UP by-polls: 43% voter turnout recorded in Gorakhpur till 5.00 pm
Phulpur parliamentary seat, which comprises five assembly segments, rural voters turned up in bigger number than urban voters. Polling was peaceful and no untoward incidents related to law and order were reported", said the State election officer.

Meanwhile, Karti's CA, S Bhaskararaman, has moved the court for anticipatory bail in the same case.

In the application submitted in Patiala House Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation has mentioned that Karti in the police custody had been evasive and non-cooperative.

The former Union minister's son was arrested on his return from the United Kingdom in connection with an FIR lodged on May 15 a year ago.

The CBI initially alleged that Karti received Rs 10 lakh as bribe for the FIPB clearance. It, however, later revised the figure to United States dollars 1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).

Karti, son of former union minister P Chidambaram, is accused of accepting money from INX Media in 2007 and 2008 in exchange for facilitating foreign investment approvals for the INX Media group, using the influence of his father, who was then Union finance minister.
