Trump views designs for border wall while bashing California

As expected, President Trump's tour of his eight border wall prototypes in San Diego was the highlight of his first presidential visit to solid-blue California.

Trump inspected eight 30-foot high (nine-meter) full-scale models made of concrete and steel, erected side-by-side at Otay Mesa, an area in southern San Diego along the border with Tijuana, Mexico.

Trump skewered California's Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, saying he'd done "a bad job" of running a state where the taxes were "way out of whack" and criminals were allowed to roam free in sanctuary cities.

"The state of California is begging us to build walls in certain areas", Trump said, claiming people don't talk about that.

He also said "very soon we're going to Mars", adding "you wouldn't even be thinking about it" if Hillary Clinton had won the 2016 presidential election.

"I'll take you to East L.A. and Boyle Heights", he said.

Last week, Brown accused the Trump administration of "basically going to war against the state of California" after Attorney General Jeff Sessions traveled to the state to announce a lawsuit that aims to compel California to cooperate with Trump's agenda of stepped-up immigrant deportations.

"We need it for the drugs".

Chanting "No ban! No wall!", demonstrators were cheered on by honking cars and buses at the San Ysidro port of entry in San Diego, the nation's busiest border crossing.

San Diego's Republican mayor criticized Trump's short visit, saying the president won't get a full picture of the city.

U.S. and Mexican authorities appeared to be collaborating closely on security measures before the president's visit.

At the protest, passersby such as José Gonzalez, 21, stopped to snap a photo of people holding signs, including one that read: "Wall off Putin!" During his campaign rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday, Trump claimed that he canceled a meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto after Nieto asked him to "make a statement that Mexico will not pay for the wall". "People are so narrow-minded", said the firefighter, who voted for Trump. California is "focusing on bridges, not walls", the governor wrote.

Trump will also be addressing Marines in San Diego before flying to Los Angeles for a high-dollar fundraiser.

"These policies release risky criminal offenders to prey on innocent people, and nullify the federal law", the president said.

"It's not good", said Mauricio Villegas, 37, glancing toward the fence and prototype walls as he passed through on his way to a job at a veterinary office.
