Windows Phone 8 rumoured devices round-up

July 31, 2012 at 15:34 GMT | By

We more or less know what to expect from the confirmed Windows Phone 8 launch OEMs - Nokia, HTC, Samsung and Huawei. Here is a breakdown of what we should expect from the four when Windows Phone 8 is officially launched.

Nokia
Nokia is expected to initially launch two Windows Phone 8 devices. We expect Nokia to announce the two devices on the 5th of September, the Nokia Lumia 910 and the Nokia Lumia 920. Unfortunately, no specifications have been confirmed as if yet but we expect Nokia to bring out the big guns. We also suspect that the mysterious Juggernaut Alpha device that recently scored a massive 151.14 (50% more than the best other device, the HTC Titan) on a benchmarking site is a Windows Phone 8 Lumia device. Also, Corporate vice president of Windows Phone, Joe Belfiore, disclosed that he was using a dual-core Nokia Windows Phone 8 prototype during his presentation at last months's Developer Summit. We also bet our bottom dollar one of the devices will look like this. And another thing, don't hold your breath for a PureView Lumia device, it might be a while (at least not this year) before we see the technology on a Windows Phone device.

HTC
HTC is preparing 3 devices, the flagship "Zenith", the midrange "Accord" and the entry-level "Rio." The Low-end "Rio" will be no slouch though, boasting of an impressive (for a low end device)4-inch WVGA display, 14.4Mbps HSPA, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 512MB of RAM and a Qualcomm MSM8227 Processor.
The mid-range "Accord" will feature a 4.3-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display, an 8-megapixel Camera with 1080p recording, 42Mbps HSPA+, NFC support (Wallet Hub and Tap&Send), 1GB of RAM and will be powered by a dual-core MSM8260A Processor
The big-brother "Zenith" is going to wipe the floor will all comers that's for sure. With a 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, 42Mbps HSPA+ and an unnamed quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon, this device will be ready to take on the best from Sammy, Nokia and Huawei.
All three devices are expected to ship this year, with Rio and Accord coming in October and the Zenith launching sometime in Q4. Should HTC up their aesthetics and industrial device design and given how their cameras have improved lately, they might shift a fair-few Windows Phone 8 devices.

Huawei
We are sure we aren't the only ones waiting - with a keen eye - to see what the Chinese OEM is bringing to Windows Phone. Huawei are known for their dirt-cheap Android devices but have recently entered the high-end smartphone market with their Ascend range. Realising that other Windows Phone 8 launch partners were grabbing all the headlines, Huawei decided to take matters to it's own hands by announcing their plans for Windows Phone 8 via an official press release last month. Shao Yang, Huawei Chief Marketing Officer confirmed that the Huawei Ascend with Windows Phone 8 will be available in Europe, China and United States, with other markets to follow. The Android powered Ascend D Quad, the flagship of the current Ascend crop boasts of a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, a 4.5-inch 720P HD display, Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, Audience earSmart voice technology, 8-megapixel rear camera alongside a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and 1080p full HD video-capture/playback. Tasty!

Samsung
As reported yesterday, court documents revealed that Samsung is planning the "Odyssey" and "Marco" Windows Phone 8 handsets.
The LTE "Odyssey" will feature a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display with HD resolution, an 8MP main camera and a 2MP shooter at the front, NFC supporting the Wallet Hub and the Tap & Send feature and a Qualcomm MSM8960 1.5GHz dual-core processor. We expect this to be dubbed the Samsung Focus S2.
The lesser will be LTE enabled but lacks NFC. It will feature a 4-inch S-AMOLED display with WVGA resolution, a 5MP main camera and a 2MP front-facing one. It will also be powered by Qualcomm's MSM8960 1.5GHz dual-core processor. We suspect this will be the Samsung Focus 3 when it's launched.
Given that both devices are LTE enabled, that indicates that they will both be American devices. Samsung's Windows Phone strategy in Europe is very confusing at the very least. The success they are experiencing on the Android platform might be making them take the eye off the ball when it comes to Windows Phone. Samsung has produced some of the better Windows Phone devices but the farcical way they have been distributed and advertised is worrying. We hope Windows Phone 8 will bring some change - but we wont be holding our breath.

Please note: this is speculation based on rumours and should not be taken as the gospel truth.

Samsung Omnia M Windows Phone available from Phones4U as of tomorrow

July 30, 2012 at 18:00 GMT | By

Our favourite independent UK phone retailer Phones4U has announced that it will be selling the Samsung Omnia M as of the 1st August. Regular readers will know the we hold Phone4U in high regard when it comes to effectively displaying and selling Windows Phones. The Omnia M couldn't have landed in safer hands. Scott Hooton, Chief Commercial Officer at Phones4u said:

We are delighted to exclusively offer the Samsung Omnia M, Samsung's latest handset running Windows 7.5, two months before it will be available via any other UK retailer. Our track record of launching Samsung devices and Windows Phones is incredibly strong and our dedicated Samsung zones in our Oxford Street and Westfield London stores provide the ultimate destination for anyone wanting to buy this Samsung device with Windows Phone.

The Samsung Omnia M was initially available in the UK via pre-order from online retailer, Unlocked-Mobiles as the Omnia Minuet. Unlocked Mobiles were asking for a cool 249.98 GBP for the Tango devices. Phones4U will have the device available on Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone with prices starting from £26 a month, including 100 minutes, 500 texts and 250MB of data.

Although a Tango device, The Omnia M comes with an impressive 4 inch Super AMOLED display. We expect the Omnia M to soon hit the sub-150 GBP price range on pay-as-you-go as soon as it's picked up by mainstream carriers. This will put it in direct competition with the Nokia Lumia 610 and 710 and bunch of low-end Android devices, which can only be a good thing for Windows Phone. The more devices in the price range, the better. As a reminder, here are the specifications:
  • Screen: 4.0" Super AMOLED display

  • Processor: 1GHz

  • Storage: 4GB

  • RAM: 384 MB

  • Camera: 5 MP (Main) with flash / VGA (Front)

  • Battery: 1500 mAh

  • Dimensions: 121.6 x 64.1 x 10.5 mm

  • Weight: 119 g
The phone will also come packed with Samsung's exclusive apps, including Family Story, ChatON, and AllShare.

Samsung Windows Phone 8 devices leaked, bringing NFC and 4.65' SAMOLED HD display

July 30, 2012 at 16:12 GMT | By

A couple of Samsung Windows Phone 8 devices appear to have been revealed in court documents submitted by Samsung in their patent case against Apple. The documents show that Samsung is planning the "Odyssey" and "Marco" Windows Phone 8 handsets.

The LTE "Odyssey" appears to be the flagship, boasting of a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED display with HD resolution, an 8MP main camera and a 2MP shooter at the front. The Odyssey is marked as an NFC device, suggesting it will support the Wallet Hub and the Tap & Send feature. It will be powered by Qualcomm's MSM8960 1.5GHz dual-core processor. We suspect this will turn out to be the Samsung Focus S2.

Although the lesser "Marco" appears to be a solid mid-range devices, its still packs a mean punch hardware-wise. Just like big-bro "Odyssey," the Marco will be LTE enabled but lacks NFC.

The documents suggest that both devices will be launched in Q4 this year, which is about the same time Windows Phone 8 will launch. Given how Samsung has distributed their Windows Phone devices in the past, we wouldn't be surprised if these two never leave the American shores.

What do you guys think, are these the sort of devices that will make you think twice about getting Windows Phone 8 Lumia device?

Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse still pushing Nokia Lumia Windows Phones

July 29, 2012 at 22:34 GMT | By

Recently, there's been stories that carriers and retailers have lost interested in Windows Phone devices since Microsoft announced that the Windows Phone 8 update will not be coming to current devices. Also, there's been suggestions that Nokia Lumia sales were tailing-off due a combination of the launch of the HTC One range, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the inability to upgrade to Windows Phone 8

We decided to visit The Trafford Centre, located in Manchester, England, to get a feel on how the Nokia Lumia range and other Windows Phone devices were doing in a real life retail environment. The Trafford Centre is on average the biggest and busiest shopping mall in the United Kingdom. All the big players in the mobile phone space are represented here; Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Three and Orange, with some having 2 units within the centre. Independent mobile phone retailers such as Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U also line up alongside the carrier stores.

We visited all carrier stores and before too long, one theme soon emerged. The was no special placement for Windows Phones. No one carrier seemed to carry more that 3 Windows Phone devices. All carries had the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710, only 2 had the Nokia Lumia 610 and none had the indomitable Nokia Lumia 900. The only non-Nokia Windows Phone device we found was the HTC Radar at the Vodafone shop. Not much of a choice if you ask me. We know that other devices like the Samsung Omnia W and the ZTE Tania are available, but finding them left us feeling like we were on a DaVinci Code quest. No wonder Windows Phone is struggling in the UK!

Of all the phones we saw in carrier shops, none had a dedicated stand like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S3. The devices seemed to the scattered amongst Androids, mainly out of the line of sight.

The story could not be different in independent shops. Phones4U and The Carphone Warehouse seem to be bothered about affording Windows Phone and the Nokia Lumia range some decent real estate and exposure. For the benefit of those who don't live in the UK or Europe: The Carphone Warehouse is a Bestbuy subsidiary, is Europe's largest independent mobile phone retailer and has over 1,700 stores across Europe, while Phones4U is the second largest independent mobile phone retailer in the United Kingdom with more than 500 stores across the isles.

At Carphone Warehouse (pictured above), we were welcomed by a dedicated area for the Nokia Lumia range, right next to Samsung's, Apple's and Sony's own dedicated display areas. The was the full complement of the Nokia Lumia devices, all connected and ready to thrill would-be Windows Phone users. We spoke to a sales rep who was ready to speak to us off-the-record. He confirmed that there was still strong interest in Lumia devices although the interest was not at the level of the iPhone or the SGS3. Unfortunately, the rep was more intersted in showing us his brand-spanking SGS3, which naturally we were unimpressed by and uninterested in. He did confirm though that customers that purchased a Windows Phone devices were highly satisfied and unlike Android users, didn't returned to the store to complain about the phone's performance or usability.

We moved across to a Phones4U shop, literally. We were greeted by the pschodelic Nokia Lumia squares on the floor, forming a path that lead to Nokia Lumia centre piece (pictured above). Not only was there a Lumia centre piece, the was a dedicated space on the wall right next to the damn-it iPhone.

The sales rep at Phone4U wasn't too pleased that we had helped ourselves without asking for permission first and was initially unwilling to speak to us. He eventually told us that Phones4U currently have a special relationship with Nokia will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. He alluded to the recent White Nokia Lumia and the Dark Knight exclusives as proof of the deep working relationship between Nokia and Phones4U. Needless to mention, the full complement of the Lumia range was also available with working display units on show. Not only that, a purchase of the Nokia Lumia 800 attracted a free XBOX console (now that a pull!). The reps appeared comfortable when talking about Windows Phone, often expanding knowledge that your run-of-the-mill sales representative would not have a clue about.

Windows Phone appears to suffer from active distribution and advertising. Before Nokia came onboard, UK carriers seemed not to know what they were doing with the Microsoft powered devices. We feel a bit more of the Phone4U treatment could go a long way. Maybe a Nokia or a Microsoft flagship store would help. But whatever it is, we hope Microsoft, Nokia and other Windows Phone partners will step up their game when Windows Phone 8 says hello.

Let us know about you experience in your local retail area.

Doodle Bomber 7: An old school gaming fun for all

July 26, 2012 at 22:28 GMT | By

Inspired by the 1977 arcade classic Canyon Bomber, the essence of the game has been enhanced and given a pleasant graphical upgrade for the mobile era.

The game is presented in pleasant and refreshing visual style where hand drawn elements are presented with distant clouds floating over a science book landscape with a brown paper canyon in the foreground. The simple to learn, difficult to master gameplay of dropping a bomb at the correct moment, will get under your skin. The altitude and speed of the airship varies each pass and hence the trajectory of the bomb. Halfway through the level the airship is replaced with a faster biplane with smaller bombs and hitting the last few targets is very difficult.
The rules are simple:
1. Drop at least one bomb per pass.
2. Hit at least one target with each bomb.
3. Clear all the targets before you lose 3 lives.

Features:

  • The game has eight canyons all with different challenges; clear all the targets on a canyon to unlock the next canyon. Forgotten Canyon can also be unlocked by submitting a review of the game from the about screen.

  • Practice mode (where you never lose any of your 3 lives) helps you to work out the best strategy for each canyon.

  • Laser guided bombs are available (every time on the first canyon, every second turn on the second canyon and so on until one time in eight on the last canyon) to help you get your eye in.

  • There are 10 airships to be unlocked each with varying characteristics of speed and bombs strength. Some airships suit particular canyons or achievements best. Once an airship is unlocked (by completing an achievement it can then be purchased using the credits from your total score.

  • Two multiplayer modes are available using the airships and canyons you have unlocked in the single player game. Versus is a straight match between the two players with 3 lives each, winner has the highest score at the end.

  • Battle mode adds a twist to the game by adding an extra life to your opponent every time you lose a life. So if you have lost all your lives you only need to wait till the other player misses, then you will have a new life. Winner has the highest score at the end.

  • The game is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Romanian and simplified Chinese.
Want the game? Hit the download button or scan the QR code with your Windows Phone.

Nokia might be announcing two Windows Phone 8 devices on the 5th of September

July 25, 2012 at 16:45 GMT | By

You would'be be forgiven for thinking that on the run-up to the Windows Phone 8 launch Paul Thurrott would be anchoring the rumour relay. While the serial leak-star appears to have lost his spark (maybe his sources are demanding too much money), WPDang are doing well to carry on the work old Thurrott started.

This time, WPDang is claiming that Nokia are set to announce 2 devices on the 5th of September, the Nokia Lumia 910 and the Nokia Lumia 920. Once again, we recommend a good sprinkle of the sodium stuff, it helps it to go down well.

WPDang were unable to confirm that any of the two devices will have PureVeiw technology on-board. That would be a major surprise as th recent acquisition of the specialist imaging software company Scalado suggest that Nokia are deadly serious about imaging on smartphone.

What do you guys thinks? Do you think two devices will be enough for Nokia?

Chinese manufacturer Oppo to launch a Windows Phone 8 device in 2013?

July 24, 2012 at 17:47 GMT | By

Yet another Chinese OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) might be joining the Windows Phone party in 2013. Independent Chinese Windows Phone website WPDang claim to have informed by their sources that Oppo have already earned the approval of Microsoft and will be launching a Windows Phone 8 device in 2013.

Windows Phone already has 2 Chinese partners in ZTE and Huawei, with the latter being a Windows Phone 8 launch partner.

Oppo is fairly new to the smartphone game but already boasts of having the world's thinnest smartphone in the Finder (pictured above) within its ranks. The sub-400 dollar Finder measures 6.65mm thick and comes with a 1.5 Ghz dual-core chip, 1GB of RAM and 16 GB internal storage.

Rumour: Windows Phone team's vacations cancelled, working on WP8 day and night

July 23, 2012 at 22:56 GMT | By

Here is another one of them that need a spoonful of the sodium stuff to help ingesting. According to Insideris.com, Windows Phone 8 is far from finished and Microsoft has halted the team's vacations. Quoting "friends of friends" that work for the Redmond giant, Insideris claims Microsoft was originally planning to release handsets sometime in summer but things haven't turned out as planned as the Windows Phone 8 operating system "is ridden with quite a few bugs."

WMPU reached out to Microsoft to verify if the rumour was true and received the usual ambiguous - "We're looking forward to delivering Windows Phone 8 with our partners later this year" - statement, meaning there could be some truth in this. WMPU also noted that Reddit user "technopwn" had echoed the same sentiments, claiming to have been informed by him friends who work for Microsoft that the OS was still incredibly buggy.

We would rather they took their time and ironed out all bugs and flaws, as long as they don't take forever.

Event Hub Lite: A Windows Phone app for those that love attending social events

July 23, 2012 at 21:30 GMT | By

If you frequently search for events on eventful.com or like to attend concerts, educational, government or any type of social event/gathering in your surroundings then this app is tailored made for you. Fetching event info from eventful.com but offering better services and features than their own native app for windows phone, this app continues the trend of third party apps offering better services.

The most important features that help this app in standing out from his competitors are its ability to check event prices and buy tickets directly from the app itself. The app also allows you to flag your favorite events, search events by venue, name or location. You can also browse events by categories and mind you there are about 25 different categories to choose from! You will surely find something that interests.

Nokia negotiating exclusive deals with European carriers for Windows Phone 8 devices

July 23, 2012 at 11:28 GMT | By

The Financial Times is reporting that Nokia may be preparing to offer its future Lumia devices as operator exclusives, much like they did with with Nokia Lumia 900 in America. Nokia is said to be negotiating with European operators France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom. If the negotiations are successful, the deal would see future Lumia devices being exclusive to France Telecom's Orange network in France and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile network in Germany.

Nokia and the Windows Phone team already have a close working relationship with France Telecom's Orange, demonstrated recently by their collaboration on the NFC enable Nokia Lumia 610, which is only offered by the network.

This will be a departure from Nokia's previous strategy of releasing devices across carries and markets which has has served them well in the past. Though exclusive deals may see Nokia benefit from increased carrier promotion and device support, it remains to be seen whether they will bear fruit in Europe.

As we've stated in the past, European carriers tend to offer attractive bonuses (data, talktime, discounts, etc) to loyal customers, making it hard for them to move to their rivals. Take the UK for instance, which has 6 somewhat equal carriers in Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, 3, O2 and Virgin. Should Nokia offer their premier device to one of them, that would mean they automatically exclude 85% of potential customers from owning the device. What do you guys think, is this a wise move?

Gravity App maker kicked out of Nokia Developer Program for refusing to move to Windows Phone

July 22, 2012 at 16:29 GMT | By

Symbian developer Jan Ole has been booted out of the Nokia Developer Program for refusing to port his popular twitter client for Symbian to Windows Phone. Ironically, Ole disclosed this on twitter when asked by a fellow user if he had any plans to bring his app across to Windows Phone. Check out the twitter conversation below:

The clever (not!) developer mentioned that he was looking into taking his application to iOS and Android. We are pretty sure he is going to do an amazing job standing out in a sea-full of twitter applications on Google Play and the iOS App Store. I doubt Windows Phone Marketplace will miss him either either. We doubt his app would have been better that Rowi or Mehdoh. The official twitter app isn't that bad either, having recently been updated with push notifications and a live tile.

Mr Ole might think it's crazy that he has been booted out but Nokia had no choice but to get rid of him. At a time when Nokia needs all the support it can get, Mr ole decided to be ungrateful by biting the hand that feeds. We suspect Mr Ole will be feeling the pinch now that Symbian's market share is falling faster that gravity. No more free Nokia phones for you Jan, Sayonara!

Would you dare to reset your Windows Phone

July 22, 2012 at 12:01 GMT | By

I appreciate that not everyone is as obsessed with their Windows Phone device(s) as much as I am, but I'm sure you love the OS just as much. I can't help it, the UI has a hypnotic effect. The Windows Phone operating system is known for its fluidity and clean metro design, but every now and them the home screen may end up clattered and the phone full of apps and settings you don't necessarily need.

As a self-proclaimed poweruser and editor of WPSuperfanboy, I tend to download apps at the request of developers for review purposes. I also download apps and games for no particular reason, mainly after trawling through Marketplace for 5-star apps. I also tend to save website that i think are of interest as favorites at the drop of a hat, meaning that my favorites list is at least 50 strong at any given point.

Recently, I was forced to change the device as I used as my daily driver, courtesy of the never-ending English rain (can you believe there was a hose pipe ban?). I though the change over was going to be the most traumatizing experience I would have to endure in a long while. But to my surprise, it was the best thing I've done for a long time, liberating at the very least. I feared I was going to be losing all my settings, favorites, apps and the rest. I realized that I had been carrying a lot of junk on my daily driver. Having to start afresh allowed me to download the apps I only use, favorite websites I frequent, synchronize email addresses that are important and above all, re-organize my home screen.

It might sound crazy but i dare you to reset your phone today. You will still be able to download your previously purchased apps without having to pay again. Developers won't love you for it but you will be glad you did, trust me.

Nokia launching their Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices a month earlier that other OEMs?

July 21, 2012 at 20:11 GMT | By

"Speculation Season" has officially begun! ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley notes that Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop told the New York Times that the Windows Phone 8 software would be "released" in October, suggesting that Microsoft may be releasing it at that time (following a September RTM) to phone makers. MJF speculates that it could mean Microsoft is going to allow Nokia to go out with Windows Phone 8 devices before other phone makers do in November.

Meanwhile, Mobile Syrup are claiming that the same statement to the NY Times by Elop instead mentioned a "September launch," suggesting that it could be implying that the software would be formally announced and available to manufacturers at that time, meaning that Nokia will launch their Windows Phone 8 devices in Spetember, with the Samsung, HTC, and Huawei following on in October.

WMPU have pulled out a statement of what Elop said when asked if whether Nokia we going to be launching Windows Phone devices ahead of other OEMs:

Mark Sue - RBC Capital Markets, LLC, Research Division
Steve, will Nokia be the first and flagship platform for Windows 8?
Stephen Elop
So we're not making any specific announcements about announced timing or how that happens. But one of the things - just to give a signal in this direction, on a number of occasions, Windows Phone 8 has been demonstrated. It's been demonstrated on Nokia hardware. We're working with them every single day on the initial hardware platforms and everything. So clearly, we have a very close relationship that is not the same as what anyone else has at this point. So the relationships are good there.

If this turns out to be the case (whichever way, September or October), we hope Nokia will use the exclusivity to full effect by launching their devices simultaneously across markets and carriers. Nokia should not be sucked into the same Nokia Lumia 900/AT&T exclusive deal. Although it's always great to have a willing and helpful partner, having a devices only available to one carrier does more damage that good. Nowadays, people are deeply embedded into the their mobile providers' services so much that expecting them to move for a device is futile. Also, announcing and launching devices soon after - much like what Apple and Samsung do - is the way to go.

Acer to launch a Windows Phone 8 device in 2013

July 21, 2012 at 17:30 GMT | By

To say the Acer Allegro was a flop is an understatement. Up to now, the Windows 7.5 device is still a phantom, thought to exist yet no one has set eyes on it. At 13mm thick, the Allegro is the fattest Windows Phone. OK, maybe that's a bit cruel but what is one expected to say about the Acer Allegro? Anyways, Acer seems to be counting on Windows Phone 8 to bring things back on track for them. A better effort that the Allegro will be much appreciated and probably see thier Windows Phone fortunes turn.

Acer will launch a new Windows Phone 8 phone globally in the second half of next year according to Chen Guowei, Group General Manager, Acer, smart phones Business. Acer have been one of the bigger players of the Windows based device portfolio and till some years back had the biggest range of Windows Mobile operating system based devices.

Windows Phone 8 has already been confirmed to be coming in the month of October this year, with Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Huawei bringing the first wave of devices.

Judge: Apple must run 'Samsung did not copy iPad' ads on their website

July 20, 2012 at 09:25 GMT | By

It's highly unlikely that you'll ever find articles that have no direct relation to Microsoft, Windows or Windows Phone on this website. But as ever, every rule has an exception and our excuse is that this one is far too hilarious to miss out. According to Bloomberg, Apple has been ordered by a British judge to run ads saying that Samsung did not copy its design for the iPad. The notice, which is in essentially an advertisement for Samsung, should remain on Apple's website for at least six months.

Judge Birss last week that ruled Samsung did not infringe Apple's designs because its Galaxy Tab tablets were not "as cool" as Cupertino's iPad, said Apple should publish a notice on its website and in British newspapers to correct any impression that Samsung had copied the iPad. Funny isn't it. Top of the morning my fellow WPSuperfanboys...

Official SkyDrive application for Windows Phone updated to v2.2

July 19, 2012 at 19:12 GMT | By

The official SkyDrive application for Windows Phone received another update today, bringing up to v2.2. There doesn't appear to be any massive changes to shout about, save for the logo and folder icons.

The logo has been updated, giving it more of a Metro feel. The yellow folder icons have also been replaced by solid blue "live tile-like" squares. Besides that, nothing seems to have changed, though we are certain the update brings some performance improvements. Let us know if you notice any changes.

Nokia sold 4 million Windows Phone Lumia devices in Q2 2012

July 19, 2012 at 12:20 GMT | By

The much anticipated Q2 results from Nokia have been released. As ever, Windows Phone haters and the anti-Nokia vultures will be circling around, trying to put the most negative spin on the numbers. Don't get it twisted, we know Nokia is a spot of bother and the numbers don't look great, but there are some positives to take from this.

Unfortunately the report shows that the Nokia made an operating loss of $1.01 billion dollars for the quarter. Nokia net sales in Q2 2012 were EUR 7.5 billion, up from EUR 7.4 billion in Q1 2012. 4 Million Windows Phone Lumia devices were sold in the quarter, with 600 000 sold in America.

600 000 might seem like a paltry sum to others, but considering that only a few months ago, Nokia was selling ZERO devices in America and the 600 000 sales have been achieved by selling 2 devices (Nokia Lumia 900 and 700 ) via 2 carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile), then the number doesn't seem that pathetic. Here is Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop's statement:

Nokia is taking action to manage through this transition period. While Q2 was a difficult quarter, Nokia employees are demonstrating their determination to strengthen our competitiveness, improve our operating model and carefully manage our financial resources. We shipped four million Lumia Smartphones in Q2, and we plan to provide updates to current Lumia products over time, well beyond the launch of Windows Phone 8. We believe the Windows Phone 8 launch will be an important catalyst for Lumia. During the quarter, we demonstrated stability in our feature phone business, and enhanced our competitiveness with the introduction of our first full touch Asha devices. In Location & Commerce, our business with auto-industry customers continued to grow, and we made good progress establishing our location-based
platform with businesses like Yahoo!, Flickr, and Bing. We continued to strengthen our patent portfolio and filed more patents in the first half of 2012 than any previous six month period since 2007. And, we are encouraged that Nokia Siemens Networks returned to underlying operating profitability through strong execution of its focused strategy.

We are executing with urgency on our restructuring program. We are disposing of non-core assets like Vertu. We are taking the necessary steps to restructure the operations of the company, which included the announcement of a new program on June 14. Faster than anticipated, we have already negotiated the closure of the Ulm, Germany R&D site, and the negotiations about the planned closure of our factory in Salo, Finland are proceeding in a collaborative spirit.

We held our net cash resources at a steady level after adjusting for the annual dividend payment to our shareholders. While Q3 will remain difficult, it is a critical priority to return our Devices & Services business to positive operating cash flow as quickly as possible.

New Smoked by Windows Phone videos coming to a website near you

July 18, 2012 at 14:11 GMT | By

Seems like it has been going on forever doesn't it? We must me honest, since we learnt that Ben "@BenthePCGuy" Rudolph was going to be taking his now famous "Smoked" camping to CES'12, we were unsure whether it was going to be a success. At first, we felt it was a gimmick that would probably give Windows Phone some publicity and would probably fade away after a short-while. How wrong we were! The "Smoked by Windows Phone" campaign is still going strong, garnering some much need publicity for the platform. A new batch of video have been added to the Windows Phone YouTube account.

Again, you are most likely to run into these new ads over the next few months all over the web, on MSNBC and MSN - even on Skype or your Xbox. If you can't wait for that chance encounter, then watch the full playlist here.

Samsung Omnia M now available for pre-order in UK

July 17, 2012 at 22:38 GMT | By

The Samsung Omnia M is now available in the UK, for pre-order via online retailer, Unlocked-Mobiles. Interestingly, it's name has picked up a few more letters, now making it the Samsung Omnia Minuet. The device will set you back a cool 249.98 GBP. Although a Tango device, The Omnia Minuet comes with an impressive 4 inch Super AMOLED display, something noted by the retailer.

Office for Windows Phone 8 revealed, coming with Office 2013 integration

July 17, 2012 at 21:54 GMT | By

At last month's Developer Summit, Joe Belfiore did mention that there were still a lot more to Windows Phone 8 features to be revealed, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to learn the a new version of Office for Windows Phone will be coming with the Apollo update.

This time, there was no summit for the reveal but a mere blog post. The post gives small details about how Office 15 will integrate with Windows Phone 8. The blog post mostly discusses the cloud-based features of Office 15, but notes that the latest version of Microsoft's suite of productivity software will extend to mobile devices:

All these settings are stored in the cloud, synced with SkyDrive, SharePoint, and your local drive, and roam with you. With the capabilities that we've built into our roaming settings service, we're able to create new settings that will roam with you across any connected device. For example, Word and PowerPoint make it easy to get right back into your work by remembering where you left off in each document or presentation. So, if you didn't have time to finish reviewing an important document before you had to leave work, Word will remember what paragraph you were last reading/editing when you open that document on another machine. PowerPoint remembers the slide you were on so you don't have to go hunting for that last edit in a long deck.

These features extend to your mobile device as well. For example, your Windows Phone will show your recent files for one-touch access while you are on the go.

It's worth noting that the app (pictured above) doesn't appear to have changed much, save for the logos. We suspect there is still a lot more to come when Microsoft finally reveal all the consumer-facing features.

Rumour: Screen Capture Feature Coming To Windows Phone 8

July 17, 2012 at 11:33 GMT | By

The screen capture feature will be integrated into Windows Phone 8, according to WPDang. For most users, the feature may be of little use but will undoubtedly be a welcome addition for developers, power-users and tech enthusiasts.

Microsoft maintained that the absence of the feature in Windows Phone 7.x was never an issue, but seem to have finally bowed to pressure from users and some technology media. WPDang reports that the feature will be enabled by pressing and holding the Start and Camera buttons.

Obviously, this is a rumour at this point which is best served with a grain of the seasoning stuff.

How to replace Nokia Lumia 900 Screen and Battery [video]

July 16, 2012 at 17:39 GMT | By

YouTube user LE55ONS has posted a step-by-step video guide on how to replace the screen and battery on a Nokia Lumia 900. We don't suppose any Nokia Lumia 900 would be needing a battery change as of yet, but we are sure a few have been dropped, resulting in broken screens. The instructions will also come in handy for Lumia 800 owners as the device shares the same industrial design as the Lumia 900.

It's worth keeping in mind that the reason it appears to come easy to LE55ONS is because he has done it several times. Also, keep in mind that this would most certainly void your warranty and is definitely not for the faint hearted.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 900's price slashed by 50% - Now $49.99

July 15, 2012 at 14:37 GMT | By

AT&T has slashed the price of the Nokia Lumia 900 from $99.00 to $49.00 with a two-year contract. The 50% price-cut comes after a few blogs correctly reported that AT&T were looking to lower the price of the Lumia 900 to differentiate from competitors.

The recently announced "Pink" version of the Lumia 900 will also make an appearance today, bring the choice of colours to 4 in the AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 range. AT&T already sell the cyan, black and white versions of the device.

Nokia and AT&T should be praised for being pro-active in trying to arrest flagging Lumia 900 sales. It remains to be seen whether potential Windows Phone users will be tempted by this offer, despite the fact that the device will not receive the impending Windows Phone 8 update. In saying that, not all smartphone buyers are bothered about software updates and the Lumia 900 will receive the lesser Windows Phone 7.8 update which will bring some Windows Phone 8 features.

Just as a reminder, the Nokia Lumia 900 comes with 4G LTE, an 8MP main camera, a 1.3 MP FF camera, a 4.3" AMOLED display, a 1.4Ghz processor and 16GB internal storage.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop responds to Windows Phone related questions posed at TechEd 2012

July 14, 2012 at 18:09 GMT | By

Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia, took time out to answer questions posed by people who attended Microsoft's TechEd 2012. The attendees asked a range of uninteresting and generic questions that obviously got a generic answer from the CEO, meaning there wasn't nothing new to learn from the exercise.

The only interesting bit is when Mr Elop is asked why current Windows Phone devices will not receive the Windows Phone 8 update. He states that all four current devices will receive Windows Phone 7.8, as well as a pattern of future updates from Nokia. These future updates will implement Internet sharing, flip-to-silence, and media content streaming. Does this mean other non-Nokia Windows Phone 7.x devices will only get the start screen?

Official London 2012 Olympics app now in Windows Phone Marketplace

July 12, 2012 at 19:42 GMT | By

A couple of days ago the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) announced that an Olympic Results application will be available for Windows Phone devices next week. It appears the app has hit Marketplace a few days earlier than expected. Get the Windows Phone/Windows 8 experience on your iPhone

July 12, 2012 at 10:42 GMT | By

We've seen plenty of applications and skins on Android and iOS devices trying to emulate the Windows Phone metro experience. Some have been half-decent, others half-baked. Metroon, a Dreamboard theme for jailbroken iOS devices comes close to bringing a near-perfect replica of the Windows 8/Windows phone interface.

The Verge's Tom Warren gives us a full hands-on display of the theme (above). It is a somewhat combination of the Windows Phone and Windows 8 interfaces. The theme has a Windows Phone-like lock screen complete with notifications, volume controls, swipe up to unlock and media player controls. The start screen is similar to that of Windows 8 and all iOS apps can be pinned to the Metroon Start Screen. Though a gallant attempt, the theme occasionally finds its way to the iPhone launcher, which of course isn't ideal when you are trying to get the full metro experience. Tom sums it up perfectly:

Overall, Metroon's attention to detail is impressive and it's a great companion to the Track 8 Metro style music player for iOS, but the combination of a mixed mode of Metro and the default iOS notifications makes it confusing at times. It's a fun way to experience Microsoft's Windows 8 interface on an iPhone, but I wouldn't recommend it for daily use.

Is the Samsung SGH-i687 a Windows Phone 8 launch device?

July 11, 2012 at 23:26 GMT | By

It wasn't going to be long before we started seeing some potential Windows Phone 8 devices come to light. It's usually some unscrupulous employee that does the job, a controlled "leak" by the manufacturer or as in the case here, a chance discovery. Someone has been sniffing around the Samsung website's User Agent Profile and has come across information about the SGH-i687.

What we have here is a Samsung Windows Phone 8 device. How do we know this? Well, the give-away is Internet Explorer 10, which we know is going to be Windows Phone 8′s default browser.

Of note is the somewhat disappointing 480x800 (WVGA) screen. Windows Phone 8 brings two higher resolutions and we naturally expected Samsung to bring out the big guns for the Windows Phone 8 launch. Could this be the lesser of two or three devices?

Another interesting point is the name of the device. Samsung's SGH-ixxx Windows Phone devices usually end up as AT&T's Focus devices. Remember that the original Focus bears the model number SGH-I917 and the follow-up, the Focus 2, is named the SGH-I667. Could this be the Samsung Focus 3? What do you guys think?

Nokia Lumia 610 added to O2 UK's Windows Phone line-up

July 11, 2012 at 19:26 GMT | By

O2 has revealed that it will start selling the Nokia Lumia 610 later this month. The network's Coming Soon web page says that the handset will be landing at some point in July.

The "affordable" Nokia Lumia 610 is the runt of Nokia's Lumia litter. Though smaller and evidently less powerful (on paper at least), the Lumia 610 is no slouch. Running Windows Phone 7.5 Tango, the handset features all Windows Phone features; including live tiles, social networking integration and Xbox Live gaming built-in. It comes with a half-decent 800MHz processor, a 3.7in display, a 5MP rear-facing camera and a 1300mAh battery. It's also available in four different colours; black, cyan, white and pink.

The device is expected to start-off at the £150 price-point on pay as you go, which we expect to tumble as we get closer to the arrival of Windows Phone 8.

Draw Something and Word With Friends coming to Windows Phone this fall

July 11, 2012 at 18:56 GMT | By

AT&T has confirmed that Words With Friends and Draw Something will be coming to Windows Phone this Fall. We first heard this at last month's Developer Summit in San Francisco. The titles, by game maker Zynga will be exclusive to Nokia Lumia devices for 60 days.

Good or bad news depending on how you want to look at it. Non-Lumia Windows Phone users are likely to be infuriated but the knowledge of that the titles will eventually come to all Windows Phone devices is should offer some consolation. Nokia seems to be working hard (more than Samsung, HTC, LG, etc. ever did) on bringing these so-called big games/apps to Windows Phone and it's only fair that they benefit in someway.

London 2012 Olympics official app coming to Windows Phone

July 10, 2012 at 22:18 GMT | By

The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) today announced that an Olympic Results applications will be available for Windows Phone devices. At present, the application is only available for iOS and Android devices but chief information officer for LOCOG, Gerry Pennell, said a version for Microsoft's platform was imminent:

Our drivers are slightly different from some commercial enterprises and our remit as an organising committee is to engage with as many people as possible through as many channels as possible, so that's driven our need to be as inclusive as possible.

It certainly makes a refreshing and welcome change that Windows Phone has not been overlooked by an organization when developing an app. The app will be available for download sometime next week from the Windows Phone Marketplace. As ever, we will let you know the moment it's make an appearance.

As can be seen above, some Windows Phone 8 features like DataSmart and Skype will not necessarily be coming to Windows Phone 7, but instead there will be an app that will more-or-less do the same job. The list also reveals some features that weren't previously announced like Bing Audio with an improved ability to recognize TV programmes.

Do you like what you see? Or are there other features that you would like to see on the list? If so, leave a comment below.

We expect The launch of Windows Phone 8 is expected to coincide with Windows 8, meanintg at least one device running Windows Phone 8 may launch in the same month. Well, if Microsoft had any marketing nous about them they would do so at the very minimum.

Nielsen's Survey finds that 96% of users satisfied with AT&T Nokia Lumia 900

July 9, 2012 at 19:53 GMT | By

It's no secret that the Nokia Lumia 900 has some pretty satisfied users. Evidence is there for anyone that bothers to find it. Remember how Siri used to think the Lumia 900 was the best smartphone before Apple decided to make it lie? The device has plenty of awards to back this up, including best phone at CES 2012. But, it's always a good idea to have the numbers to back this up. Nokia commissioned Nielsen's in April to quiz US buyers of the Lumia 900 to see how happy they were with their purchase. Here is what the figures say:

  • 96 per cent of owners are extremely satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their Lumia 900

  • 95 per cent of owners are willing to recommend the Lumia 900

  • 83 per cent say that their expectations are better or much better than expected

  • 85 per cent say they would repurchase the Lumia 900

  • 91 per cent of the respondents believe that the Lumia 900 is better than other mobile phones.

  • 95 per cent thought downloading a game or app from Windows Phone Marketplace was easy to do

Also, about two-thirds of the people who took part in the survey bought their phone in-store, and of those 90 per cent took place in an AT&T. Almost feels like a case of stating the obvious as we've always known that Nokia Lumia 900 owners were highly satisfied with their devices.

Pink Nokia Lumia 900 announced - Exclusive to AT&T

July 9, 2012 at 19:53 GMT | By

Nokia today announced the addition of the pink Lumia 900. The magenta/fuschia (well, pink if you like) Lumia 900 will be available in the US from AT&T from July 15th. AT&T currently carries the black, cyan and white colours.

The device will obviously appeal to the fairer sex (and of course some brave metro-sexual men) because of it's bright colour. One thing thing not to worry about is the colour fading or peeling off. The Lumia 900 is polycarbonate, meaning it's constructed of one piece of plastic - the unibody construction is pink all the way through. So, if you get a scratch on your pink Lumia 900, it will never show.

Any of our readers going to be brave enough for the pink Lumia 900? Let us know below.

Nokia begins 'Money Back Challenge' to boost Lumia 800 and 710 sales

July 9, 2012 at 14:51 GMT | By

Nokia are kicking off a new campaign in India dubbed the "Amazing Money Back Challenge," according to Tech2.in. The "Challenge" allows potential Windows Phone customers to purchase a Nokia Lumia 710 or 800 device and then return in within seven days for a full refund if they are not satisfied.

The campaign is live now on Nokia India's Facebook page and all you have to do is enter your contact details, select the store closest to you and wait for a call from them. Obviously, Nokia wouldn't do this without slapping on a tonne of conditions: the handset can only be returned if it's in a very good condition and all the accessories are present in the box. You can only return the phone to the store from where you've purchased it.

Unlike Tech2.in, we don't think this exercise reeks of desperation at all. In fact, we think it's genius and inspired. Obviously, should a lot of people buy devices and later return them, Nokia will find themselves with a lot of reconditioned phones to get rid of. We know how good Windows Phone is. When someone buys a device and uses it, we know it would be very difficult not to fall in love with Windows Phone.

Verizon's Windows Phone 8 Lumia device coming with wireless charging?

July 9, 2012 at 10:39 GMT | By

Here is another one of them that need a spoonful of salt to help ingesting. According to Nokia Innovation (not linked to Nokia), Verizon will be launching a Nokia Lumia device before the end of the year. That much we know because Richard Kerris, Nokia's VP of Worldwide Developer Relations recently told Neowin that Sprint and indeed Verizon were going to be launching Lumia devices in time for the Christmas holidays. The news here is that Izzi, writer for Nokia Innovation claims to have gone to a Verizon shop and got more than he bargained for:

I went into a Verizon store over the weekend to show off my white glossy Lumia 900 but I never anticipated what I would leave with. I had a chat with a Verizon employee who knew an awful lot about Windows Phone 8, and he unwittingly told me about Verizon's upcoming Nokia Windows Phone 8 Device and how we would be able to charge them wirelessly (no wires), he also said it would be equipped with PureView Technology (like the Nokia 808) and that they are working on readying it for the holiday season 2012.

Wireless charging would definitely be cool on a Windows Phone device (like the modded Nokia Lumia 800 above). Though this is nothing more that just a rumour, it would make sense as carriers will want some sort of differentiation on whichever Windows Phone Lumia devices they decide to carry.

What do you guys think?

Chinese Windows Phone Marketplace to be taken over by MSN China

July 7, 2012 at 00:30 GMT | By

WPDang is reporting that Microsoft is getting ready to transfer the operating of the Windows Phone Marketplace to MSN China. This might lead to China getting its own mobile app distribution server, which will make the downloading and installing of apps even smoother for Chinese users. If you thought this was fine because MSN belongs to Microsoft then you could be any further from the truth. Due to a series of laws and regulations, MSN China is joint venture between Microsoft and a local partner, each owning 50% of the JV company. It primarily runs the Chinese version of the MSN portal. By giving MSN China the full control of the Windows Phone Marketplace, Microsoft is hoping to utilize the connections of its Chinese JV partner, and iron out the bumps along the way to implementing Chinese Yuan support in app purchasing.

At present, Chinese Windows Phone users have to pay for apps in US dollar instead of the Yuan, which is not convenient by any means. Things will get a lot easier with a local JV partner involved. WPDang reports that MSN China will take full control of the Chinese Marketplace after the release of Windows Phone 8.

Lumia 910 leaked via Nokia's Remote Device Access [RDA] tool.

July 6, 2012 at 22:54 GMT | By

A Nokia Lumia 910 has turned up on Nokia's RDA tool for developers. The Remote Device Access (RDA) is a service that allows developers to test their mobile applications and services remotely on various Nokia devices without owning them.

The Nokia Lumia 910 was rumoured to be 12 MP camera variant of Lumia 900 that was supposed to come to Verizon sometime after Lumia 900's release but never showed up. The only logical explanation left now would be that this could be Windows Phone 8 device since the Verizon rumour proved to be incorrect. Or better yet, could it be a Windows Phone 7.5 device that can be upgraded to Windows Phone 8? I know, I know... Sounds silly but Nokia needs to sell something between now and the Windows Phone 8 launch, and I don't see any tech-savvy potential customers buying any of the current Lumia devices that will be obsolete in three months time. That's my barmy explanation. What's yours?

Greg Sullivan: Manufacturers doing some really cool things with Windows Phone 8

July 6, 2012 at 17:23 GMT | By

Senior Product manager for Windows Phone at Microsoft, Greg Sullivan, told Pocket-lint that Windows Phone 8's launch OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) are readying some cool features for the operating system's launch devices.

Speaking in a behind-closed-doors interview, Sullivan said:

Our hardware partners are doing some really cool things for the Windows Phone 8 launch. We are really excited by the hardware we are seeing from our current partners. We are big believers in them.

This should go a long way in dispelling the myth that Microsoft are readying their own Windows Phone device, much like they have with the Surface. It remains to be seen whether half-hearted partners like HTC and Samsung are going to be bringing innovative hardware and features to Windows Phone 8. One thing for certain is that Nokia are going to be "bringing out the big guns" because it's make or break for them.

What would your ideal Windows Phone 8 device have?

Lenovo to produce a Windows Phone 8 handset, wants Nokia-level customization

July 4, 2012 at 23:27 GMT | By

Despite not being named as one of the four launch partners for Windows Phone 8 last month, Lenovo still confirmed that they intended to produce a Windows Phone device.

WPDang is reporting that this might come at a cost to Microsoft as Lenovo doesn't want to just sell stock Windows Phone, they want to be allowed to differentiate with their devices like Nokia does. Lenovo would be the third Chinese OEM to join the Windows Phone platform, after ZTE and Huawei. Though the addition of Lenovo could lead to Windows Phone growth market share in China, a market in which Lenovo has significant knowledge and penetration, allowing OEMs customization could lead to terminal fragmentation.

Currently, only Nokia has permission to make subtle tweaks on some Windows Phone applications and functions. The Nokia-Microsoft partnership runs deep, something that can't be said of Lenovo. Given how they never supported Windows Phone 7, one wonders why they think they should be afforded that privilege. Maybe if they pledged the same level of commitment as Nokia has, the team of R&D executives sent to negotiate with Microsoft might not bring back a big fat NO!

Your thoughts please... Leave a comment below.

Nokia launching Windows Phone 8 devices before the end of the year

July 4, 2012 at 00:46 GMT | By

Microsoft announced at the Developer Summit a couple of weeks ago that Windows Phone 8 would have four partners at launch, namely, Nokia, Samsung, HTC and Huawei. While Huawei were quick off the mark to announce that they were going to be bringing their Ascend range to Windows Phone, it took a "leak" from an HTC insider to for us to find out the they were planning to launch three Windows Phone 8 devices; the flagship "Zenith", the midrange "Accord" and the entry-level "Rio." Samsung have also promised to bring a Samsung Galaxy SIII like device to Windows Phone 8, yet the premier Windows Phone OEM in Nokia has been conspicuously quiet. Unknown to us, there have been rumours that the first Windows Phone 8 Nokia devices were not going to be launching until early 2013. Fortunately - for some of us that are holding out for a WP8 Lumia - WPDang is reporting that Nokia has accelerated its processes and are now on target to release their initial Windows Phone 8 devices before the of the year.

So what should we expect from Nokia? Well, Meetmeego.org's Cosimo Kroll claims to have met a Nokia employee who told him that Nokia's Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) offerings will be "incredible" and "unbelievable." Also, Nokia design boss Marko Ahtisaari said that they were working on a revolutionary new smartphone that will make other handsets seem dated. We think the next Lumia design will most likely resemble the leaked render (above).

Do you like the potential design? Let us know by leaving a comment at the bottom.

More Windows Phone 7.8 feature rumours, might be getting more that just the start screen

July 2, 2012 at 16:44 GMT | By

Ready for some more Windows Phone 7.8 rumours? We are happy to oblige... but only ask one thing of you. Please get yourself a salt shaker, make sure there's plenty of the white stuff inside, stick your tongue out, afford yourself a generous sprinkle and you are good to go. Remember the Nuno Silva debacle or self proclaimed evangelist Joao Luis' "tip-off from a 'confidential' inside source whom he trusts 200%"? Doesn't ring a bell? What about Nokia's U.S. president Chris Weber leading us on by saying both Microsoft and Nokia understood the importance for consumers to keep their devices fresh and updated, and therefore "were working to make sure people have fresh and updated experiences on any device they may have." That is exactly why we recommended the salt!

Now, salt on tongue, we're hearing that there will be more features to be announced for Windows Phone 7.8, courtesy of some semi-official twittering (Joe Marini anyone?). Ben Lower, Senior Product Manager for Windows Phone Developer Experience tweeted that "there will be more," when responding to a developer who had complained that they wanted more from Windows Phone 7.8 than the start screen.

On a similar note, responding to a question about Windows Phone 7.8 features at TechEd 2012 in Netherlands, Senior Product Manager and WP team member, Larry Lieberman, said:

Will Windows Phone 7.8 get new features as well that you can access as a developer? Maybe. We haven't announced it yet.
All we've announced is the new Start screen at this point. Sorry, nothing new to announce. You're asking me stuff I can't answer.

Make of it what you wish but this sounds like there will be more features coming to Windows Phone 8. We suspect the Windows Phone team haven't quite made up their minds on "which" features to bring over to WP7.8 yet. Like we have said before, there are some (announced) Windows Phone 8 features that are not hardware reliant. The Data Usage application, the Wallet and Skype integration will work on WP7.x devices but will need a lot of work, time and money to be made to work on the CE kernel. No reason to assume that current devices will be getting any more than just the start screen, but these latest happenings suggest that we might in for a pleasant surprise.

July 2, 2012 at 13:24 GMT | By

WMPoweruser claims that Microsoft's research team is working on a curved software keyboard that might be made available in Windows Phone 8. The site has managed land an image of the onscreen keyboard in action (above), which they claim to be a leaked Microsoft Research presentation.

The curved keyboard appears to be designed for single-handed use, following the arc of the thumb across the screen and presumably using predictive text technonolgy to make up for the heaps of mistakes the keyboard is likely to cause.

What is more interesting is that fact that the keyboard in question is appears to be demoed on a first generation HTC trophy, meaning there's in nothing stopping it coming to Windows Phone 7.8 - well, if the whole thing is not a hoax.

What do you guys make of this, is it something that could be useful to you?

More features found in Windows Phone Tango update

July 2, 2012 at 12:28 GMT | By

Lucky folk over at WPCentral managed to force manually install the Windows Phone Refresh/Tango update onto their three Windows Phone devices, namely, the Samsung Focus 2, HTC Titan II and Nokia Lumia 900. Apparently, the update seems to bring more features than originally thought and documented. Here is a list of what WPCentral's Daniel Rubino noted:

  • New wallpapers - New "nature" themed wallpapers included in Tango

  • Faster numeric PIN response - While minor, the slow numeric PIN response can annoying. The Tango update fixes this.

  • Sending ringtones via MMS - You can now attach and send ringtones to others via MMS. You can only send custom ringtones though and nothing that is "in ROM". This in addition to the new "send voice note" and attach multiple images in an MMS that's found in Tango too.

  • Letter indexing - On Windows Phone 7.x after a user installs 45 apps, the app list will automatically index, giving you the "letter picker" to jump to find your favorite app. The problem, albeit minor, was if you went below 45, the "letter picker" would not disappear. Tango evidently fixes this.

  • More reliable notifications - Many users are reporting better notifications, both Tile and Toast, with the Tango update.
Nice if you can get it. I tried to update my two devices (Orange UK branded Omnia 7 and unbranded Titan) all weekend without luck. Its seems like our friends across the pond are getting all the sugar from Microsoft at the moment. If you are interested in forcing inducing the update, try this:
  • Set phone to Flight Mode

  • Fire up Zune and connect your phone

  • Click update and cut off your WIFI (internet) connection after about 2 seconds.

  • If you get it right you will get a 8112 update prompt.

  • Repeat until you get no more update prompts, 8773 should be the last.

  • Some Nokia users are also receiving a firmware update, so it's always worth checking one last time.
Let us know how you get on. Leave a comment below.

Official Facebook App for Windows Phone gets another update

July 1, 2012 at 10:53 GMT | By

Whatever Microsoft did to make the official Windows Phone Facebook app developers start taking their job seriously is definitely working. Imagine my surprise when I got up this morning to find that YET another update prompt for the Facebook app, barely a week after the last. We are definitely on unfamiliar territory here but we aren't complaining.

Version 2.7 doesn't bring any obvious feature additions, well, as far as we what we can tell. And given how the developers have not revealed what's changed and the update turnaround, we assume this can only be bug fix.

If your Marketplace tile isn't showing the update yet and for some reason you are desperate for update, then head to Marketplace-> search for Facebook-> select Facebook app-> hit the back button-> select Facebook app again and your update will show up.

Official Twitter app for Windows Phone finally adds push notifications

July 1, 2012 at 08:24 GMT | By

Notifications have been finally added to the official Windows Phone Twitter app. Version 1.5 allows you to customise Toast notifications. The notifications appear in the same way a text message appears at the top of the screen.

The options include Mentions, Favourited tweets, Retweets, Direct Messages, and New Followers.Sadly, there's no counter to see how much activity is going on in the world of Twitter from the tile but it will flip round to show the latest tweet that mentioned you. Twitter's new logo has also been added.
